16 Best High Fantasy Authors of All Time Till Today
There are literally hundreds of subgenres of fantasy, but one of them is grander than all, be it in scale, character, magic, and everything else. That subgenre is high fantasy or epic fantasy.
The authors of high fantasy are often seen as geniuses and elites as it takes a lot of imagination and skill to write a high fantasy novel, let alone a big series such as The Wheel of Time or The Song of Ice and Fire. High/Epic Fantasy authors have to come up with a world that is different in most aspects from our world, yet they are relatable – and that takes talent.
High or Epic Fantasy is undoubtedly at the top of the list of fantasy subgenres, and the authors of this subgenre are seen in a different regard. However, among these highly talented, knowledgeable masters of fantasy literature, there are some who stand out from the crowd through their works and emit light brighter than the others, and we, as readers, are drawn to their creations as moths.
In this post, I am going to talk about 16 such masters of high or epic fantasy whose works have overwhelmed me with awe and amazement. They are the kings and queens of high fantasy, and their books are masterpieces that we can’t have enough of.
These are the 16 greatest high/epic fantasy authors of all time:
1. J.R.R. Tolkien: The grand architect of Middle-earth
You just cannot come up with a list of high/epic fantasy authors and don’t mention his name. If you leave out this man, you insult the great subgenre of high/epic fantasy.
J.R.R. Tolkien is the author who gave us Middle Earth, one of the grandest and most recognized fictional worlds ever existed. He gave us The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion, which transport us to a world full of magic, wonder, and adventure. Middle Earth is a fictional realm so expansive, so vivid, you almost believe it’s just a portal away and wish for it to be real.
A highly gifted storyteller, Tolkien was also a great admirer of ancient cultures, old languages, and lore. He studied old English literature and ancient languages that helped him a great deal to create one of the vastest and most magical fictional worlds. He was so skilled at creating languages that he made up whole new ones for the races in Middle-earth!
He had a rare and amazing talent for turning ‘reality into magic’! His tales reflected his personal life experiences. Remember the Shire, the peaceful, green land where our dear hobbits live? Tolkien’s own childhood inspired it in the English countryside. And the grim, desolate land of Mordor? It echoes the harsh realities he faced in the trenches of the First World War.
Now, don’t get me wrong, Middle-earth isn’t exactly a vacation spot. With dragons, dark lords, and the occasional giant spider, it’s quite the adventure! But, in the wise words of our favorite hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door… But I suppose if you step onto the road, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.
2. George R.R. Martin: The modern-day master of epic battles and intricate plots
Now, onto a maestro of the high fantasy genre, George R.R. Martin, a name I’m sure many of you recognize. After all, it’s hard not to, as he is the mastermind behind A Song of Ice and Fire, better known as the Game of Thrones series. His captivating tales of knights, dragons, and a relentless winter have captivated readers (and viewers!) all over the globe.
When it comes to storytelling, Martin is in a whole new league. He has created a new standard for storytelling, and he singlehandedly changed the way of modern storytelling style, be it on the screen or on the pages. He crafts his narratives with a painter’s precision, detailing each scene so vividly that you feel you’re right there amidst the bustling markets of King’s Landing or the icy wilderness beyond the Wall.
And his characterization is out of this world! The characters he creates are as real as they come, each with their unique strengths, weaknesses, ambitions, and fears. No wonder he’s one of my favorite authors, as I am a fan of great characterization. His ability to flesh out characters and make them feel so human in a world so starkly different from ours is truly magical.
But it’s not just the intricate plotlines and richly textured, three-dimensional characters that set Martin apart. It’s his bold, unflinching exploration of the raw and gritty aspects of life and the human mind. The world of Westeros isn’t a fairytale kingdom; it’s a land teeming with power struggles, betrayals, and moral complexities, where heroes fall, and villains rise – very much like the world we live in now.
Martin isn’t afraid to take risks, and it shows in every twist and turn of his bewitching tales. He is never afraid of getting rid of a beloved character, just like a piece of wasted paper, and rather than making the story dull, it makes the story more fascinating.
Reading Martin’s work is just like embarking on an epic journey; you don’t know how or where it will end. It can sometimes be heartbreaking (I’ve lost count of the times I’ve yelled at a book or the screen in disbelief!), but it’s always beguiling. If you haven’t experienced his stories yet, do yourself a favor and dive into the world of Westeros. But remember, winter is coming!
3. Brandon Sanderson: A weaver of magical realms and intricate narratives
If you love modern high fantasy, there’s no chance you are not familiar with the works of Brandon Sanderson – the wonder boy of high fantasy! He is undoubtedly one of the most popular and critically acclaimed fantasy authors of the modern era.
This American author is a master of his craft, known for his complex yet accessible storytelling. As one of my favorites, his writing captures the imagination with a blend of complex plotlines and expansive world-building, all while writing in an approachable style – which I thought impossible until I read his masterpieces.
His creation of the Cosmere universe best exemplifies Sanderson’s ability to build compelling fantasy universes. Many of his most acclaimed novels, such as the Mistborn series and The Stormlight Archive, take place in this vast and vividly detailed universe. Also, his successful young adult and juvenile series like The Reckoners, the Skyward series, and the Alcatraz series are placed outside the Cosmere Universe.
One of the most significant achievements of this talented author’s career was to be chosen to finish Robert Jordan’s masterpiece – The Wheel Of Time, one of the brightest gems of the realm of epic fantasy literature.
Sanderson has changed the craft of creating fantasy magic systems through Sanderson’s Laws of Magic, which categorize magic systems into hard and soft, thereby creating a new way of understanding and developing magic in fantasy settings. He even hosts a podcast called ‘Writing Excuses’ and an educational YouTube channel, sharing valuable insights into genre writing and the process of creating engrossing narratives.
If you think of modern high/epic fantasy and modern science fiction, you can’t leave out Brandon Sanderson. His sophisticated magic systems, imaginative worldbuilding, and timeless plots have definitely has earned him a place among the all-time greats of fantasy literature.
4. Robert Jordan: A remarkable author with an incredible legacy
Robert Jordan truly was a marvel in the epic fantasy genre. You just can’t ignore him when talking about high fantasy. Whenever you talk about high or epic fantasy, one of the first names that come to mind is Robert Jordan, and for a good reason, as he is the author of one of the most renowned and longest epic fantasy series of all time, the Wheel of Time.
With 14 books (the last one written by Brandon Sanderson, mentioned in the previous section) and a prequel novel, the Wheel of Time series is a realm of its own!
His untimely death left the literary world in shock. The void he left seemed insurmountable, but Brandon Sanderson stepped in, continuing Jordan’s legacy by completing the series. That’s a testament not only to Sanderson’s talent but also to the robust framework Jordan had laid down. He had poured so much into this series, even sharing major plot details with his family, ensuring its completion even if he couldn’t be the one to pen it.
But Jordan was more than just the Wheel of Time. Did you know he actually wrote Conan the Barbarian novels too? Fans swear by his versions as some of the best beyond the originals by Robert E. Howard, which is high praise indeed. This man was the embodiment of versatility, having written in different genres under different pseudonyms. Historical fiction, western, and even dance criticism – he had his hand in everything!
There’s an air of mystery around him as well. Jordan claimed he ghostwrote an international thriller. We’re left speculating about this enigmatic work. Is it out there somewhere under another name? Who knows? But that’s the thing about Jordan – he always keeps you guessing, both in his life and his literature.
5. Patrick Rothfuss: The bard behind the ‘Kingkiller Chronicle’
When you think about an enchanting narrative that takes you on a heroic adventure, the name Patrick Rothfuss may spring to mind. Born on June 6, 1973, Rothfuss is a conjurer of words and worlds, creating realms that are as thrilling as they are enchanting. A master of the pen, Rothfuss’ name is synonymous with the globally acclaimed series, ‘The Kingkiller Chronicle.’
Rothfuss’ literary journey began at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he spent nearly a decade honing his craft. Here, his passion for storytelling was nurtured, and his very first novel was submitted for a writing contest, which he triumphantly won. This victory was a catalyst for his career, culminating in the creation of his debut masterpiece, ‘The Name of the Wind’ – a book that propelled him to international acclaim and bagged him the prestigious Quill Award in 2007.
The second novel of his series, ‘The Wise Man’s Fear,’ was another monumental success, earning him a coveted spot on The New York Times Best Seller list. The final installment, ‘The Doors of Stone,’ has fans waiting with bated breath, anxiously anticipating the conclusion of this epic saga. But Rothfuss, ever the master storyteller, isn’t stopping there. He has hinted at future novels set within the same captivating universe.
Patrick Rothfuss, with his deeply immersive world-building and vivid characters, has proven that he’s not just a writer of fantasy but a weaver of magical narratives. With his books, he invites us to leave reality at the doorstep and step into a realm of profound imagination and unforgettable adventure. His works are not just stories—they are journeys that transform us, showing us that magic can indeed spill from the pages of a book and seep into the corners of our world.
6. Terry Pratchett: The Wizard of Whimsy and Wisdom
In the rich tapestry of high fantasy literature, one name stands out with a sparkle of wit and wisdom – Terry Pratchett. Born in 1948 in the quaint town of Beaconsfield, England, Pratchett’s journey to literary stardom began as a junior journalist, but his destiny had other plans. His destiny, it seemed, was to become the creator of Discworld, one of the most elaborate, imaginative, and downright hilarious fantasy worlds ever put to page.
Pratchett published his first Discworld novel, ‘The Colour of Magic,’ in 1983, introducing readers to an uncanny universe resting on the backs of four massive elephants standing on a giant turtle floating through space. Sounds absurd? Well, that’s Pratchett for you – a genius of a kind that pushes the boundaries of imagination and turns absurdity into an art form.
What sets Pratchett apart is his unique blend of whimsy, satire, and profound wisdom. His narratives were always engaging, full of bizarre scenarios and characters, from inept wizards to ambitious witches, from anthropomorphic personifications of Death (who speaks in ALL CAPS) to a luggage chest with hundreds of tiny legs. Yet, beneath the humor and fantastical hijinks lay razor-sharp insights into human nature, politics, philosophy, and the absurdity of our own ’round world’ existence.
Over his career, Pratchett penned a staggering 41 Discworld novels, each one a gem of wit, fantasy, and piercing social commentary. His books have been translated into 37 languages, and he has sold more than 85 million copies worldwide, a testament to the universal appeal of his uniquely satirical vision.
Sadly, Pratchett passed away in 2016, but his legacy lives on. He once said, No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away… True to his words, the ripples created by his extraordinary imagination continue to entertain, enlighten, and inspire readers of all ages.
7. Mark Lawrence: Spinning dark and gripping tales in high fantasy
Mark Lawrence’s books aren’t your everyday high fantasy stories. They dive deep into the human mind, showing the struggle and survival in a world of magic and chaos. With his unique style and gripping stories, Lawrence has truly made a name for himself in the world of high fantasy.
If you’re looking for a high fantasy author who knows how to keep readers on the edge of their seats, then Mark Lawrence is your guy. This British-American writer may have started out as a research scientist, but when his first book, Prince of Thorns, hit the shelves in 2011, it was clear he had another calling. This book, the first in the ‘Broken Empire’ trilogy, showed the world that Lawrence was a force to be reckoned with in fantasy writing.
What makes Lawrence’s work stand out is how he writes about tough, real-life issues in his fantasy worlds. His stories aren’t just about knights and castles but about real people facing real challenges. His characters, like Jorg Ancrath from the ‘Broken Empire series, are not clear-cut heroes or villains. They’re real people, with all the good, bad, and everything in between.
In his other series, ‘Red Queen’s War’ and ‘Book of the Ancestor,’ Lawrence continues to keep readers hooked with thrilling tales of survival, power struggles, and the many faces of humanity. All this is set in a world that’s teetering on the brink of disaster, keeping you glued to the page, eager to know what happens next.
8. Patricia A. McKillip: Painting high fantasy with a poetic brush
One of the beautiful things about being an avid reader is the chance to stumble upon authors who write in a way that speaks directly to your soul. For me, Patricia A. McKillip is one such author. Every time I dive into one of her novels, I’m enveloped in a world that’s both wildly imaginative and deeply humane.
What makes McKillip’s work so memorable, and what places her among the top high-fantasy authors of all time, is the lyrical beauty of her prose. Her narratives aren’t just plots and characters; they’re enchanting poems that pull you into her magical worlds. In books like The Forgotten Beasts of Eld and The Riddle-Master Trilogy, the story unfolds like a ballad, making each page a treat to read.
While all this is wonderful, one of the aspects of her work that has me captivated is her ability to infuse each of her characters with intricate depth and vitality. It’s not just about magic and adventure; it’s about the character’s emotional journeys, their relationships, and their personal growth.
The magic of McKillip’s storytelling hasn’t gone unnoticed. She’s the recipient of the esteemed World Fantasy Award and the Locus Award, just to name a few. And in my eyes, each one is well-deserved. As a long-time fan, the news of her earning another accolade always brought a smile to my face. It felt like a personal victory, a shared joy with an author who has given me countless hours of reading pleasure.
What I’ve always admired about McKillip, and what keeps me returning to her books, is how beautifully she blends the fantastical and the human. Her high fantasy isn’t just about dragons, wizards, or far-off lands. It’s about finding beauty in the ordinary, discovering strength in vulnerability, and unearthing magic in our everyday lives.
9. Leigh Bardugo: Charting unseen territories in high fantasy
When I think about my journey through the universe of high fantasy literature, Leigh Bardugo stands out as a beacon of ingenuity and compelling storytelling. From the moment I turned the first page of Shadow and Bone, I knew I was venturing into a world that was refreshingly original and remarkably vivid.
As a lover of the genre, I’ve always appreciated authors who can surprise me, taking familiar themes and archetypes and reshaping them into something entirely unique. Bardugo, with her Grishaverse series, does just that. She masterfully melds magic and grit, casting a new light on the fantasy landscape. It’s as if she looked at the genre and asked, But what if we do it this way?
One of my favorite personal experiences with Bardugo’s work happened when I was reading Six of Crows. I was so immersed in the story that I completely lost track of time. It was past midnight when I realized I was huddled in my blanket fort (yes, I’m an adult who enjoys a good blanket fort), turning pages with wide-eyed anticipation, utterly invested in the fate of a gang of unlikely heroes.
Her characters are not your stereotypical fantasy figures; they’re flawed, relatable, and beautifully human, even when dealing with magic. Reading about Kaz Brekker and his band of misfits felt like befriending them. Their victories became my victories, their losses, my losses. Few authors have ever managed to make me feel such a profound connection with their characters.
And let’s not forget about the world-building. Oh, the world-building! Bardugo’s Grishaverse is a dazzling realm that’s rich in detail and history. The geography, the politics, the cultures – everything is so intricately woven that you’d think she’s writing about a real, tangible place.
In a genre often dominated by authors who stick to well-trodden paths, Bardugo is a breath of fresh air. Her unique blend of realism and magic, her unforgettable characters, and her flair for intense, emotional storytelling make her one of the high fantasy genre’s brightest stars.
10. Jay Kristoff: The maestro of thrilling fantasy
When I delve into the realm of high fantasy literature, there are certain names that reverberate with an undying echo of creativity and inventiveness. Among them, Jay Kristoff stands tall, his literary prowess undeniable in the face of the awe-inspiring stories he crafts. From Nevernight to Stormdancer, his books have consistently taken me on an adrenaline-fueled journey that leaves me yearning for more.
Kristoff’s specialty lies in his ability to maintain a relentless pace while painting vivid images with his poetic prose. This rare combination of fast-paced storytelling with beautiful language sets him apart in the vast sea of fantasy authors. Reading his works is akin to watching a brilliantly choreographed ballet – each word, each sentence dances with grace and intensity, drawing you further into the spectacle.
I recall the moment I first embarked on the Nevernight Chronicle. Mia Corvere’s tale immediately captured me, her thirst for vengeance, her lethal skills, and her complicated personality. Kristoff’s talent for character development shone through as he masterfully transformed this seemingly cold-hearted assassin into a relatable and sympathetic protagonist.
Each plot twist is a gut punch, unexpected yet wholly satisfying. It’s a wild roller-coaster ride with Kristoff at the helm, guiding us through loops and turns with masterful control. His stories brimmed with raw emotion, making my heart pound in anticipation of what might unfold on the next page.
But it’s not just about the thrill. His world-building skills are second to none. The worlds he crafts, whether it’s the dystopian land of Shima or the deadly halls of the Red Church, are painted in rich and detailed strokes. They are places of wonder and terror, where magic and machines coexist and where heroes might be villains in disguise.
In essence, Jay Kristoff’s stories are a thrilling dance of words that draw you in and refuse to let go. His signature blend of fast-paced narrative, intricately woven characters, and exquisitely detailed settings make him a force to be reckoned with in the realm of high fantasy. Every tale he weaves is a testament to his mastery of the genre, and I, for one, am always ready for the next thrilling ride.
11. Steven Erikson: Unleashing the Colossus of Fantasy
Steven Erikson is a titan of high fantasy literature. His audacious narratives, deep world-building, and layered characters have set a new standard for the genre. Engaging with his works is not merely reading; it’s an experience, a journey into realms of high adventure, deep introspection, and the very essence of fantasy.
If any discussion about the best fantasy series of all time leaves out the Malazan Book of the Fallen – it’s a crime. As we dive into the works of Canadian author Steven Erikson, it’s evident why his ten-book epic series has captured the hearts of high fantasy enthusiasts globally.
Erikson, a master craftsman, has not merely written a story but has breathed life into a universe. His unique style, characterized by detailed historical and geographical context, along with diverse and deeply human characters, has propelled him to the top tiers of high fantasy literature.
His sprawling, complex narratives do not hold the reader’s hand; they demand full attention, engagement, and the courage to embrace uncertainty. In the Malazan Book of the Fallen, Erikson introduces us to an abundance of characters and cultures, each with their histories, motivations, and destinies. As a former archaeologist and anthropologist, his command of history and culture infuses a palpable authenticity into his works, immersing readers in his meticulously crafted worlds.
12. Robin Hobb: Weaving magic with words
In the vibrant tapestry of high fantasy literature, Robin Hobb stands as a master weaver, her rich storytelling and complex characters taking the genre to new heights. The author, whose real name is Margaret Astrid Lindholm Ogden, has crafted multiple series under the pen name Robin Hobb, with each one more immersive and compelling than the last.
Hobb’s works are marked by her deft handling of character development and emotional depth, setting her stories apart in a genre often dominated by epic battles and high magic. Her novels, particularly The Farseer, Liveship Traders, Tawny Man, and Rain Wild Chronicles provide a masterclass in emotional storytelling. The characters in this series are beautifully flawed and wholly relatable; they triumph, they err, and they grow.
Perhaps the most recognized of her creations is FitzChivalry Farseer, a character so real and multi-dimensional that readers across the globe have laughed, cried, and experienced every shade of emotion in between alongside him. His journey is a testament to Hobb’s profound understanding of the human spirit, its resilience, and its capacity for growth and transformation.
Hobb’s vivid and imaginative world-building is another cornerstone of her brilliance. She paints detailed, sprawling worlds with her words, intricately weaving social and political structures that lend her stories a tangible reality. Her skillful integration of magic, as with the Skill and the Wit in the Farseer Trilogy, fits seamlessly into these realities, never overshadowing the human heart of her narratives.
Her insightful explorations of themes like destiny, sacrifice, and the morality of power elevate her works beyond mere entertainment. They resonate with readers, prompting introspection and discussion, making her books not just engaging reads but deeply impactful experiences.
To read Robin Hobb is to embark on a journey of raw emotion and deep connection, through expertly crafted worlds and in the company of characters who feel like old friends. She is, without a doubt, one of the greatest fantasy writers of our time, and her stories are an indelible part of the genre’s landscape.
13. Scott Lynch: A maestro of mischief and high fantasy
Scott Lynch, a name synonymous with the allure of intricate heist plots, witty dialogue, and a whirlwind of high-stakes adventures, stands as an undeniable force in the world of high fantasy literature. He is the cunning architect behind the Gentleman Bastard series, an exceptional saga that has etched an unforgettable mark on the genre.
Lynch debuted with The Lies of Locke Lamora, and it was immediately clear that a new kind of fantasy rogue had arrived. Set in the bustling and brilliantly conceived city of Camorr, the story follows Locke Lamora and his crew of thieves, the Gentleman Bastards.
This debut is filled with audacious deceptions, brilliant stratagems, and a captivating camaraderie that draws readers in and refuses to let go. In recognition of its sheer brilliance, the novel was a finalist for the World Fantasy Award in 2007, an impressive feat for a debut novel.
But Lynch didn’t stop there. He went on to win the Sydney J. Bounds Best Newcomer Award from the British Fantasy Society in 2008, a testament to his creative prowess and rapidly growing influence in the realm of high fantasy.
What sets Lynch apart is his unique blend of humor, tension, and intricate world-building, coupled with his ability to deliver surprises at every turn. His character, Locke, is no typical hero. He’s flawed and human, yet clever and endearing, and his exploits and relationships form the heartbeat of Lynch’s compelling narrative.
Lynch’s masterful storytelling doesn’t shy away from exploring darker themes, offering commentary on class disparity, friendship, loyalty, and the cost of ambition. His works invite readers to question morality while being entirely swept away in a world of complex politics, charming rogues, and inventive con-artistry.
In the landscape of high fantasy literature, Scott Lynch is an author who shines, crafting stories that are equally parts thrilling, humorous, and deeply impactful. His contribution to the genre is undeniable, marking him as one of the best high fantasy authors of our time.
14. Naomi Novik: Reinventing high fantasy with a modern touch
As the landscape of high fantasy literature continues to evolve, few authors have made as significant an impact as Naomi Novik. With her unique blend of historical elements, literary grace, and the episodic structure often found in computer games, Novik has not only etched her name into the annals of the genre but has also pushed its boundaries.
A prolific reader since childhood, Novik’s literary roots trace back to her voracious appetite for fantasy literature, most notably, J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ Her fascination for the Napoleonic era and authors like Patrick O’Brian and Jane Austen also deeply influenced her storytelling style, as reflected in her works.
Novik’s debut series, ‘Temeraire,’ set during the Napoleonic Wars, brought dragons into the mix, transforming a historical setting into a rich, vibrant high fantasy world. The series was widely acclaimed for its inventive premise and the seamless integration of fantasy elements into a historical context.
Her standalone novel, ‘Uprooted,’ showcased a different side of her writing. Drawing from her Polish roots, Novik weaves an enchanting fairy tale, introducing readers to a beautifully strange and compelling world filled with magic, mystery, and a deep sense of folklore.
Her latest series, ‘Spinning Silver,’ is another testament to her creativity. Here, Novik reimagines the classic Rumpelstiltskin tale, setting it in a world that echoes medieval Eastern Europe, replete with cunning heroines, chilling threats, and mesmerizing magic.
Naomi Novik’s impressive array of work showcases her ability to seamlessly blend historical facts, captivating storytelling, and innovative fantasy elements. She keeps readers hooked with her knack for suspense and plot twists, her deeply layered characters, and her ability to create enchanting worlds.
Her unique approach to high fantasy and unwavering commitment to her craft is what makes her a prominent figure in the genre. Truly, Naomi Novik is a modern maestro of high fantasy.
15. Sarah J. Maas: A romanced dance in the realm of high fantasy
As an ardent reader of high fantasy, there are few authors who captivate my imagination and keep me up through the wee hours, page after page, quite like Sarah J. Maas. Her unique ability to craft tales where high fantasy and romance interweave so seamlessly is, in my opinion, akin to a perfect dance.
I remember when I first laid hands on ‘Throne of Glass.’ The protagonist, Aelin Galathynius, was not just another character in a book but a fiercely independent woman whose journey from an assassin to a queen felt incredibly personal. The saga was a thrilling ride, filled with epic battles, political maneuvers, and a romance that pulled at my heartstrings.
Maas’s ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses,’ a masterful reimagination of Beauty and the Beast, was a journey of another kind. The way she gave each character depth and complexity while spinning a tale that was both enchanting and emotionally charged truly set it apart. It was a testament to her storytelling prowess that she could breathe new life into a classic tale, all while staying true to the high fantasy genre that I love so much.
But Sarah J. Maas’s books are more than mere stories; they are some fantastic immersive experiences. They transport you to vibrant, fantastical realms that linger in your mind long after the last page has been turned. I’ve often found myself lost in her worlds, captivated by the adventures and deeply moved by the romances.
So why is Sarah J. Maas one of the greats in high fantasy? For me, it’s the sheer breadth of her appeal. Whether it’s the high-stakes adventure, the compelling characters, the intricate world-building, or the heartfelt love stories, there’s something in her books for everyone. In the realm of high fantasy, she’s a queen who has firmly secured her crown. And as a reader, I feel fortunate to be one of her many loyal subjects, ever ready for the next adventure.
16. Joe Abercrombie: A dark guide through the Depths of high fantasy
Joe Abercrombie first caught my attention when I stumbled upon The First Law trilogy. It was a beacon in the often predictable sea of high fantasy, a beacon that shone in a different shade – a grimdark hue. From the first pages of ‘The Blade Itself,’ Abercrombie had me hooked, pulling me into a world of raw and unapologetic grimness that was as refreshing as it was enthralling.
The world of ‘First Law’ was no fairy tale kingdom. Its heroes weren’t knights in shining armor, and its princesses had more to do than just await their Prince Charming. I found myself drawn to these flawed characters, living in a world filled with shades of gray. They were deep, nuanced, and the very definition of complex, their relatable struggles making their journeys all the more real to me.
But Abercrombie’s genius doesn’t stop at creating an intricate world filled with compelling characters. He weaves in a wicked sense of humor into his dark narratives, a stark contrast that I found unexpectedly enjoyable. It was this combination of intense grimness with a sharp wit that I found exhilarating and genuinely refreshing.
Abercrombie’s mastery of grimdark fantasy in The First Law trilogy is like a thrilling roller coaster ride. It’s not always comfortable or predictable, but it’s undeniably exhilarating and unforgettable. In my book, Abercrombie’s work stands as a testament to the brilliant potential of fantasy when a daring author dares to walk the less-traveled path. Indeed, I count my journeys in the world of ‘First Law’ as one of my most treasured reading experiences.
Final Thoughts:
And there you have it – our epic adventure through the spellbinding worlds created by some of the greatest high fantasy authors of all time. From the towering towers of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth to the intricate political machinations of George R. R. Martin’s Westeros, from the fierce heroines of Sarah J. Maas to the poetic brilliance of Patricia A. McKillip, each of these remarkable authors has contributed something unique and extraordinary to the genre of high fantasy.
Reading these works isn’t merely about losing ourselves in another world but rather about finding pieces of our own humanity reflected back at us through characters, creatures, and lands borne from the depths of these authors’ imaginations. Each of these authors not only crafted compelling narratives but also opened doors to worlds so vibrant and rich they’ve become near-tangible realities in the minds of millions.
If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of diving into the works of these incredible authors, I hope this journey has sparked curiosity, an itch, and a longing to embark on your own exploration. And for those of you who, like me, are already familiar with these masters of the craft, may this serve as an affectionate nod to the worlds we’ve come to know and love and perhaps an invitation to revisit these realms once more.
I am Sanchita, and books are my life force. I live and breathe stories. Getting lost in fictional worlds has been my favorite thing to do for as long as I can remember. Over the course of 20 years, I have read over a thousand books and here I have come to talk about them.
